History
In 1980 the Polish Veterans' Association organized a meeting to discuss how Durham Region could provide financial funding to assist the survivors of a natural disaster. This relief project was soon supported by numerous other ethnic associations. A local funding campaign was then initiated which resulted in financial relief for the victims of a major earthquake that struck southern Italy. This community effort was such a success that these individuals felt they could assist others in similar situations. Subsequently, the seeds were planted for an ethnocultural council to provide assistance and develop communication links among the groups. Thus, the Multicultural Council of OshawaIDurham was formed.
The Multicultural Council of OshawalDurham was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization and has continued to grow and expand in both its membership and community involvement, supporting positive human relations and respect for multiculturalism. The M.C.O.D. has continued to support local organizations through the various projects which are offered, such as Linking Durham Region and the Scholarship Fund.
